CGEO 702 Section BA0
Part One
You will choose a product and undertake a product life-cycle analysis loosely based on Kearney’s (2010) “A product life-cycle approach to sustainability”. In the end, you can either demonstrate the sustainable and holistic nature of the product or indicate where in the process — from the supply materials selection to the item’s final disposal — the product goes off the rails in terms of its ecological valuation. Refer to Franklin’s concepts of redemptive technology, using her checklist and notions of prescriptive and holistic technologies, in order to test the relative sustainability of whatever item you have decided to examine. You can also employ green economics and/or GPI constructs in your analysis if you like.
Do not write an essay but rather develop a time-line-like structure that shows the various stages of the life-cycle, highlighting those parts of the process that are particularly notable and which will help to support your final conclusions about (1) the ecological merits of the product; (2) the utility of your analysis; and (3) Franklin’s arguments about the need to develop redemptive technologies.
