Section 1:
Research Project: Five Forces Analysis Paper: Write a 3-page paper, analyzing any one industry, based on the Five Forces detailed on page 43 of the text. Your paper should contain full citations and references for the sources you use. Be prepared to informally discuss your analysis in class. Your submission will be evaluated based on the rubric in Appendix B.
**Choose an industry and select three companies that have a global market presence within the industry. Find country profiles for at least three countries in which these companies have a presence. At least one country should be common to all three companies. Find at least one current article from a business publication dealing with the industry. (Some suggested publications are: Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Forbes, Business Week, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, etc.)
Section 2:
(b) Research Project: Competitive Advantage, Culture, and Ethics Paper. Research and write a four-page analysis of one firm’s competitive advantage, culture, and ethics incorporating Porter’s Diamond Model, Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture, and the Transparency International Corruption Rankings. Use at least four sources in addition to the Global Strategy text. Based on your analysis, conclude your paper with a brief discussion about what has contributed to the success of the firm. Remember to cite and reference your sources. Tips for the project are listed below.
o Focusing on the firms you selected for Section One homework, determine which of the three firms has the greatest competitive advantage in one of the countries, based on Porter’s Diamond Model.
o Locate the country on each of Hofstede’s Dimensions of Culture.
o Locate the country on the Transparency International Corruption Rankings.
Section 3:
Research Project: Start Up Costs and Strategy. Consider the challenges of an entrepreneurial firm (SME, fewer than 500 employees) in the industry you researched in Sections 1-2. Using the Internet and traditional library resources, research and write a two-page paper on the costs of starting up a new firm internationally and the strategy you would choose. Tips for the project are listed below.
o Startup costs should follow the guide listed in Table 5.1.
o Focus your costs and strategy on the country from the Class 2 research.
o Justify your choice of strategies.
o Cite and reference at least four resources beyond those already listed in your previous research.
Section 4:
Research Project: Alliances and Networks. Consider the entrepreneurial firm you researched start up costs for in Class 3. Using the Internet and traditional library resources, research and write a three-page paper recommending potential strategic alliances and networks for the firm in the country you chose for Class 3. Tips for the project are listed below.
o Use the Three-Stage Decision Model in making your recommendation.
o Be specific with your recommendation of strategic alliances or networks, i.e., name potential allies.
