an overview of Late Traditional East Asia in the period right before the arrival of the West. We will look at the Ming and Qing dynasties of China on Tuesday and the Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan on Friday.
One of the most fascinating episodes of this period was the voyages of exploration led by the Muslim eunuch, Zheng He, during China’s Ming Dynasty. The Ming Emperor Yongle (a.k.a., Zhu Di) commissioned these voyages in the early fifteenth century.
Read about Zheng He’s explorations in the book, When China Ruled the Seas, pp. 75-121, 137-147, 167-181). There are a number of questions about these voyages that are still heatedly debated and which the book discusses:
Why did these voyages begin?
Why did they come to an end? But more important than these questions is this one I want you to focus on in this assignment:
What do these voyages tell us about China’s relationship to the outside world? Focus on the kinds of activities the Chinese are engaged in, in all the different countries they visit.
List three different activities—try to focus on what seemed to be the most important of these activities, especially in view of how China traditionally conducted its relations with its neighbors–, and then write a short paragraph for each of these activities, with references to the text, explaining how each activity sheds light on China’s overall relationship to the outside world. find the book online plz and read the book and that is one page essay
