Assignment: In Unit four, we read about a number of critical approaches to literature, and in one of your discussion posts you gave a brief sense of how you might apply one of these approaches to a work of literature. Now, you are doing that to a much more extensive degree.
You will select three works of literature : One play, one short story, and one poem from you textbook. You will also select one of the critical approaches discussed in your book’s section: “Critical Strategies for Reading.”
Then, you will write an essay that analyzes and interprets the works you’ve chosen through the lens of the critical approach you’ve chosen. Here is a list of “Critical Strategies for Reading” Formalist strategies focus on the formal elements of a work, its language, structure, and tone.
This kind of close reading a literary work, such as diction, irony, paradox, metaphor, and symbol. Formalists examine how these elements work together to give a coherent shape to the work. Literary History Criticism move beyond both the facts of an author’s personal life and the text itself to the social and intellectual currents in which the author composed the work.
They place the work in the context of its time (as do many critical biographers, who write “lie and times” studies). and sometimes they make connections with other literary works that may have influenced the author. one short story I felt would fit this is Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” one poem: William Blake’s poem “London” and one play: William Shakespeare “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”
