Purpose
The purpose of this activity is dispelling stereotypes, as you practice describing the perceptions and misconceptions of specific populations. It’s important to recognize the complexity of different populations.
Instructions
Chapter 12 in the textbook explored the educational experiences of diverse groups and backgrounds. I specifically connected to this part on page 387 of the textbook:
“Until American society begins to believe that all persons are equal and treats everyone as an individual rather than typing people according to group membership, we will continue to experience problems of equal educational opportunity.”
Based on your understanding of the concepts in Chapter 12 in the textbook, as well as your life experiences, you will complete four “Just Because” poems for FOUR DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS/GROUPS explored in the chapter.
The poems should provide a reflective thinking experience for you, as well as insight into what you thought about during and after reading Chapter 12 in the textbook.
Complete the following four steps in order, using the spaces provided in this document. You will submit your completed Just Becausedocument to the Just Because Dropbox folder in the course. You may also share one of your poems in the Just Because Poem Sharing discussion forum, although this sharing is not required.
Step One
Select four different individuals/groups from the following list. Remember that each category below is very diverse – so individual membership in each “group” is just a broad category. You could also break it down further to a more specific individual/group if you would like (eg. Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Hmong, etc.).
Individual/Group | Textbook Reference |
Caucasian | See pages 366-370 |
Asian | See pages 375-376 |
Hispanic | See pages 377-378 |
African-American | See pages 366-370 |
Poverty | See pages 379-381 |

Line 2 begins with the words “It doesn’t mean…” Lines 3-4 begin with the word “Doesn’t…” Lines 5-7 being with the words “It does mean…” Line 8 should be your strong statement – what you want the reader to understand about who you are. |
