Topic: Human beings use evaluation skills on a daily basis. Whether watching a movie trailer and deciding if going to the theater is worthwhile or viewing campaign ads and deciding who you want to vote for in an upcoming election, these decisions require evaluation. Paper 3 is a
3½ -4 page (1,100-1,200 word) evaluation of a “text,” which will be chosen from the options provided below. From this assignment you will develop the ability to recognize the effectiveness of “texts,” be able to understand and use rhetorical strategies, and become aware of fallacies that should neither be used nor allowed to persuade you.
As you are preparing to write your paper, consider the following pattern of preparation:
1. Analyze and evaluate one of the options. In analyzing and evaluating texts, ask yourself questions such as:
Who is the audience and what is the purpose of this text/artifact?
What messages, explicit or implicit, accurate or inaccurate, does this text produce?
What language and visual images are incorporated into this text and for what purpose?
2. Then, in writing your paper, you will need to introduce your criteria for evaluation and explain how the “text” you are analyzing and evaluating does or does not measure up. Note: Opinion alone is not evaluation. When we evaluate, we must use criteria (standards) that our “text” must meet and we must support our judgment (our opinion) with evidence.
-For students choosing Options 1 or 2, you will evaluate that group of texts through their Ethos, Pathos, and/or Logos (possibly structure/organization, if you choose to do so).
-For students choosing Option 3, you will evaluate at least one movie trailer, but no more than three. From the list below, choose 2-3 criteria to use, but make sure the criteria you choose is appropriate for the “text” you are evaluating. Keep the “text’s” purpose in mind when deciding on criteria. Additionally, at least one criterion must be one of Aristotle’s appeals (Ethos, Pathos, and/or Logos).
Get attention and/or Hold attention
Create desire/ Does it make you want to see the movie?
Entertaining
Structure/Organization
Appear to satisfy the conventions of the genre
3. Evaluate/Draft: Make sure you fully understand the purpose of the text and what it is attempting to achieve. Then, in your paper be sure to state the “text’s” purpose. Once you understand the text, evaluate the author’s methods (for example, the text’s use of ethos, pathos, logos) and its effectivenss in achieving its purpose.
