formal and informal hypothesis

For this discussion forum, share with the class your for your course project. If you are doing a one-sample test, you must compare your data to something that another has calculated. You do not have to base the null value on published, peer-reviewed research. It could be based on anything you find on the Internet. Give the URL where you found the comparison value.

Decide if you are going to do an upper-tail, lower-tail or two-tailed test. If you are doing a two-sample test, you may need to read ahead a bit in Chapter 7 to see how the null and alternate hypotheses are formulated. My research topic: The research I would like to conduct would be the Co- hort study between Physical education programs in elementary and middle schools and childhood obesity.

When budget cuts are made in schoolsstand, extracurricular activities that are not needed for standardized testing are cut. Physical education programs are being stripped for finding for other needs of the school. This is alarming because for many especially inner city youth, this is the only opportunity they have for excerise among the other mirad of benfits school physical education programs offer. My continous data would be age, weight, and BMI. For all variables I would find the mean, median, and standard deviation for those who participate in a school physical education program and for those who do not. My dicchotomous variables would be gender and access to physical education program.

Gender is important in this aspect in knowing if there is a difference in experience if any between the genders. The actual option of a physical education program is important to see if obesity is impacted by this. I would most likely have a study at a school that does have a physical education program. My sample population based on similar variables of age and gender, will be divided into those who participant and those who do not over a determined period of time. This cohort study will help find a correlation if any, between physical education programs and childhood obesity. The data will be charted in a bar graph and frequency histogram to show the caring effects for all variables.

Other factors such as socioeconomic status of the children’s family must be discussed but would have to be regulated as apart of the limitations part of the study and called for future research. The probability sampling technique I would use is stratified sampling. This would give me the opportunity to separate the sample population by gender. Once that is done, simple random sampling technique will randomly select which population will have access to a physical education program. This will allow the selection of children based at random after they have been narrowed down by gender. I would like to have a sample size of 150 children from both one elementary school and one middle school.

The students will be picked by stratified sampling narrowing the population down to 300 students (150 for each school). Once that is done, simple random sampling will assign whether these particular students will have access to a physical education program. An issue I see that can arise from the stratified sampling technique is that I might have more of one gender than another. I really want to have a close enough equal amount of both genders but they do not have to be 50/50. Simple random sampling can be difficult because it may not provide enough of a population that I may need. I would need a more equal number for both participation and none participation in physical education program.

The non-probability sampling technique I might use is the quota sampling technique. This would help with my desire to have equal amount of participants in both gender and participation level. By being able to select how many females, males, and level of participation, I can have more control over the variables. I could possibly do 50% of both genders from 1-5 grade and 50% of both genders from 7-8 grade. 1-5 grade will be broken up by 20% of both genders and 7-8 grade with 50% of each gender in each respective grades. Quota sampling can be too controlling with the variables and not produce conclusive results.
