BUAD 3000 Career Development II

Job Vacancy: build your brand for a specific company

50 points

Due by 11:59 p.m., Sunday, September 2, in the Blackboard Assignment Drop Box

Late assignments are not accepted

Introduction Your personal brand is always evolving. As you continue to refine your brand through the four stages of personal branding: discovery, creation, communication, and maintenance, pay attention to:

· what you know about yourself (discovery);

· how you build your brand (creating your job search tools);

· how you share it (communicating your brand through applying for positions, networking, and developing your LinkedIn presence); and

· how you build and refine your brand through ongoing networking (maintenance). The Job Vacancy Assignment will serve as your foundation for building your brand for a specific company and position. If you can align your brand with one company and position, you can repeat the process with each opportunity moving forward.

Requirements You will identify a company/organization, (hereafter referred to as “company”), and its location, for whom you would like to work and a “real” posted job vacancy, and then, go through a few steps to ensure you can brand yourself for the position. You must seek an internship vacancy or an entry-level position for which no more than three years of experience are needed.

Resources Although we will be discussing job search methods throughout the course, you may need to do some of the initial work on your own, for this assignment, identify a company with a posted position using the resources below. If you need assistance, visit with me during office hours the first week of classes. Please note that the company you select will be the company you continue to use for subsequent assignments.

Use the following resources to identify a posted job vacancy.

· The company’s website

· handshake, COBI’s new comprehensive platform for jobs, internships, events, employer connections, and more. If you have not created your profile, get started, now! · CollegeGrad.com an extensive career preparation and job/internship search site

· College of Business and Innovation Job Fair List (Note: the Job Fair is September 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Student Union. This list is regularly updated.)

· Linkedin Student Jobs (although this is the entry level jobs/internships site, you may navigate to the regular jobs area on LinkedIn)

· GoinGlobal, for consideration of opportunities here and abroad (requires your UTAD credentials)

· Top Fortune 500 Companies

· Glassdoor.com, provides great information about company salaries, reviews and interview questions for thousands of companies. Navigate to the right side of the page to find different listings of “Top Companies to Work For.”

· The Riley Guide, a tremendous listing of job search sites.

Directions

Step 1 Select your job vacancy

Locate a “real” job vacancy for which you are qualified now. Find an internship or entry-level position requiring no more than one to three years of experience, with a company of interest using the suggested resources. The job vacancy you select must have at least five required/desired skills you will use to brand yourself in all of your upcoming assignments. If the vacancy does not have at least five skills, look for another! Once you have identified the position vacancy, copy and paste the text into a new Microsoft Word document or a PDF, and save it. A hard copy version of the job vacancy will be due with your resume assignments.

Step 2 Respond to these questions (copy and paste the questions into a Microsoft Word document for completion)

1. What is the name of the company you have selected and its location (city/state)? (3 points)

2. Why do you believe you are a match for this position? Be Specific. (5 points 0-2=Needs Improvement, 3-4=Acceptable, 5=Excellent) There are many ways to approach this response. You may:

· make a connection between the company’s required skills and your own skill set;

· draw a comparison between the company’s and your vision and values;

· identify a personal desire to be aligned with a company you admire; or

· explain why the company would be good for you and you, for the company.

Make this meaningful and unique to you! This process prepares you for branding yourself in an interview.

3. What are the five of the required/desired skills (keywords) noted in the vacancy that you possess and could promote about yourself on your resume and other job search toolsList them below(5 points) Do not use any of the following: GPA, required major or degree, or words like “assist,” “work,” or “maintain,” that do not really promote meaningful skills. You will lose points!

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

4. Paste the Job Vacancy below. Highlight the five keywords or key phrases(15 points: 10 for the vacancy, 5 for the highlights)

Job Vacancy with highlighted keywords goes here

5. Compose three statements you could use on your resume that include at least three of the five required/desired skills you have recorded and highlighted in questions 3 and 4. Highlight the keyword or phrase in each of the statements. Your statements should align with best practices for resume construction taught in BUAD 2000, Career Development I. Remember, making sure keywords , industry verbiage and buzzwords are included in your resume and job search correspondence is critical. If an employer’s Applicant Tracking System (ATS) does not recognize these desired words once you upload your document, your credentials will not be discovered or considered.

Each response will be given a value of 1, 2 or 3. (1=Needs Improvement, 2=Acceptable, 3=Excellent). Please be specific, not general! Use the Sample Submission on pages 3 and 4 as a guide. 12 points (3 for highlighting; 9 for the quality of the responses).

· Precede each statement with a bullet point.

· Begin each statement with an appropriate present or past tense action verb, not a gerund (ing).

· Include accomplishments, evidence of change or development, results, and quantifiable information.

Need help with a resume writing refresher? Try using this formula created by Laszlo Block, author of the LinkedIn article, “My Personal Formula for a Winning Resume” to compose your statements.

Accomplished X as measured by Y by doing Z

Examples:

· Managed sorority budget (Fair—too general)

· Managed $31,000 Spring 2014 budget and invested $10,000 in idle funds in appropriate high-yielding capital notes returning 5% over the year (Better—and specific)

Step 3 Submit the assignment When completed, proofread and then submit the assignment in the Blackboard Assignment Drop Box by 11:59 p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2018. An additional 10 points are available for spelling and grammar.

Ensure that you save your submission confirmation number and the Blackboard email message with the same confirmation number for verification of assignment submission. This confirmation number is proof of your submission in the event there are any disputes.

Remember to print a copy of the job vacancy to use with the resume assignment submission. Your Peer Career Assistant needs to be able to see from where your keyword have come!

Sample Submission (pages 3 and 4)

1. What is the name of the company you have selected and location (city/state)? (3 points)

Dana Corporation, Maumee, OH

2. Why do you believe you are a match for this position? Be Specific. (5 points 0-2=Needs Improvement, 3-4=Acceptable, 5=Excellent)

I suppose I could say that I really want to work for Dana Corporation because they want to be the global leader in efficient power movement and energy solutions, but it’s really more than that. After researching Dana’s web page and speaking with former Dana interns, I appreciate learning about Dana’s commitment to being a good corporate citizen, something that is woven throughout its Standards of Business Conduct. Dana does “the right thing” for the company, its people, and the community. There are a lot of opportunities for engaging in community events. In fact, I discovered that some Dana employees volunteer at Josina Lott, where I have volunteered for years. I feel like we already are connected by our mutual interest in serving others.

3. What are the five of the required/desired skills (keywords) noted in the vacancy that you possess and could promote about yourself on your resume and other job search toolsList them below(5 points)

Each response will be given a value of 1, 2 or 3. (1=Needs Improvement, 2=Acceptable, 3=Excellent). “Specific Example” means an individual event, project, task etc. It does not mean writing in generalities.
