The ethical dilemmas, or the moral dilemmas represent situations in which an individual is faced with a compelling decision to make, often by choosing among a set of options (Russ, 2017). The moral-ethical dilemma that I was faced with related to the blogging job that I was doing for an online firm during the summer one year. In my situation, none of the available options at the time appeared to resolve the dilemma in a fashion that is ethically acceptable, in which case my personal as well as the societal ethical guidelines could not provide an outcome that would be considered to be completely satisfactory. The society’s expectation was that the ethical norms including the religious teachings and codes of the law be abided by in making a choice to resolve the moral-ethical dilemma.
The moral-ethical dilemma being reflected upon relates to the complaint I launched to the human resource manager of a blogging firm that I worked for during one summer. The complaint was informed by the dissatisfaction experienced when the company’s management turned down the request to grant a short leave when I was sick with a medical note from my doctor. Further, the fact that I was to spend a short period of time working with the firm meant that I could hardly get a change to receive any job promotions. As a result, I was faced with the option of keeping quiet about the dissatisfaction experiences or speak up through the blog and be at crossroads with the firm’s management. The decision of going ahead to express the dissatisfaction was taken, after which the employer started considering the option of having me fired.
In solving the said moral-ethical dilemma, the bold step of expressing the dissatisfaction through a blog was taken. This was performed in the hope that the summer blogging firm would apologize and grant a compensatory leave. Contrary to this aforementioned aspect, the Weblog firm took the expression in bad faith and considered it as one which tarnishes its reputation. In the end, the outcome of the dilemma was that my short summer holiday engagement was terminated. Faced with the same issue at the present day, I would not take the option of expressing dissatisfaction at the work place through a blog post. Instead, the available legal frameworks concerning workers’ rights would be followed. For this reason, I would consider suing the company in a labor court for violation of a sick employee’s rights and privileges (Landau, 2017).
As a matter of principle, ethics have the importance of making the society a better place, treating individuals in an equal manner, and securing meaningful employment positions. For instance, in the case of the moral-ethical dilemma that I was faced with, the fundamental aspect of good ethics that relates to equal treatment of individuals was particularly lacking. “Correct ethical behavior shown from employer can develop a strong faith, trust, believe towards company. Trust can be a strong tool to unleash an employee’s full potential and loyalty, redirecting it to company needs” (Importance of Ethical Behavior, 2017).
Further, the aspect of equality as a component of good ethics affords all people with equal privileges as well as a sense of mindfulness (William, Mathew, & Michael, 2015). This aforementioned aspect can only be achieved if people in the society behave in an ethically sound manner. One’s actions should be considered at all times since they affect the outcomes of the moral decisions taken (William, Mathew, & Michael, 2015). Actions also provide an effective sense of responsibility that is required to perform an ethically good behavior.
