Key characteristics of team leader

The team leader key characteristics include motivating the team members which affects the work efficiency. According to Sarin and O’Connor (2009) article, team leaders’ effectiveness is derived from four main factors:

Power and influence levels of the team leader.

Communication skills and interaction with the team.

Personal strengths and qualities.

Leadership and management skills.

The team leader should consider team members points in the decision-making process, should be approachable to the team members and ready to accept and resolve team member’s queries. Respect to all team members thereby creates a pleasant work environment (Sarin, S. and McDermott, C, 2003).

Participation and consideration are the key visible indicators for a team leader’s management style.

Different low and high combinations of the directive and supportive behavior would create different leadership styles.

Directing style is where the team leader would provide specific instructions and monitors the completion of the assigned tasks w.r.to team members.

Coaching style implies that the team leader continuously supervises the tasks and explains decisions, provides support and suggestions to the team.

Supporting means that the team leader supports the employee’s efforts and gives them the responsibility for decision-making.

The delegating style is where responsibility for problem-solving and decision-making is totally given to team members.

All these styles are important for a successful team leader but the most important style is directing style. Article by DeRue, Barnes, and Morgeson (2010) mainly discuss how a team performance is affected by the team leader behaviors, mainly elaborated on how leader charisma and team member self-efficacy. These would interact mainly with leadership styles like coaching and directive which affect overall team performance.

Charismatic leadership method acts on encouraging the specific behavior of team member persuasion, by eloquent communication, and force of personality.  Charismatic leaders always motivate the team to get things done and target good improvements (Morgeson, F. P., & DeRue, D. S, 2006).  I have seen this with many of my team leaders in various projects who mainly target the stated goal or vision and effectively guide the team to successful accomplishments, always charismatic leaders create a high-performance environment.
