Paper 2 Controversial Issue – 7-8 page double-spaced/typed paper analyzing your second out- of-class taped interview on a controversial issue. You find a stranger to interview, tape the interview, and write a paper based on the guidelines provided in the course packet.
1. Interview topic: planned and actual (state planned IV topic in one sentence. Then briefly indicate whether the topic changed or was modified during the IV indicating how and why it was modified) 1/8 to ¼ page.
2. Adequacy of IV planning: indicate how you planned your IV topic and how much the interviewee or research on the topic? If so, what was the research and how did it affect IV? How did you plan to approach and motivate interviewee? Why or why not use schedule, organizational, sequences question sequence? 2 pages
3. Opening of the IV: how did the ethics/ purpose statement go? How did your initial approach to the interviewee go? How might you improve it? How did the 2 or 3 questions in the IV go? How was the initial rapport level? Note any of your behaviors that were especially effective or in need of improvement in the opening section of the IV. ½ page
4. Use of question sequencing and transitions: what question sequence did you plan to use: funnel, tunnel, etc. what sequence did you actually use and why? Evaluate your actual sequencing or questions and use of transitions in the IV. ½ page
5. Questions and probes: evaluate your use of questions and probes in the IV and indicate how the interviewee responded to your questions and probes. Illustrate your analysis by citing your two best questions or probes and your two worst questions or probes. Then tell why these are best or worst and how they affected the interview. Then suggest improved questions each of your listed worst questions or probes. 1 – 1.5 pages
6. Relationship and Nonverbal issues: evaluate the quality of the interviewee – interviewer relationship in the IV. Did it change? How? Evaluate the issues of inclusion, affection, and control and cite specific examples of behaviors that affected these. Cite example of the two best and two worst interviewer behaviors that affected the relationship between interviewee and interviewer. Then tell how you’d improve on the worst interviewer relational behaviors. Then tell how you’d improve on the worst interviewer relational behaviors. Then cite examples of at least two non-verbal behaviors and interviewee and/ or interviewer that affected the interview and tell how. 2 pages
7. Other IV factors: include anything not noted above. Perhaps IV setting, distractions, tape recorder problems, cultural/ gender differences, etc. Indicate how these affected the IV. ¼ – ½ page
8. List of planned q’s: list all planned IV q’s, in list, single spaced. ¼ page if necessary list of questions may go on to page6. Only IV q’s allowed on page 6.
