COMM 297FA / The Folklore of Alcohol Translation Assignment
Length: Variable Percentage of Final Grade: Due Date:
For those of you who possess foreign language skills, you may opt to translate a text as a contribution to the class. The text in question should focus on the folklore, history, or cultural aspects of alcohol in some way.
Your contribution may entail the translation from an article or excerpt from a newspaper, magazine, or academic journal; an encyclopedia essay; an advertisement or set of ads; poetry; blog entries; company websites; or a similar written work. It may also entail a translation of the spoken word such as a video found online or recorded by the student.
Instructions
First, you should contact Professor Gencarella with basic information about the text you intend to translation, including any relevant links. You should also identify your proficiency in the language you intend to translate.
The purpose of this contact is not to obtain permission per se, but to guarantee that the chosen text for translation will be fair with respect to length and time commitment asked of other students.
The final translation should require 5-10 hours of work.
In composing your translation, be sure to include relevant introductory information such as its date of composition, the authors, and any culturally significant contexts or information necessary for the reader to understand references contained in the text.
You should include a copy of the text in its original language. Links to websites are appropriate.
Your translation does not need to be perfect. You will not be graded on the translation per se—that is, you will not be graded on issues of grammar, diction, or style. Even the ‘gist’ of the text would be acceptable, although it should convey as much of the original content as possible. It should, however, far exceed a Google Translate This Page.
The purpose of this assignment is to translate a text currently unavailable in English. If you wish to translate a text already available in English, please consult Professor Gencarella.
Students may work together in groups on a translation, but they must receive prior permission from Professor Gencarella. They will need to commit to a suitable and fair amount of material relevant to the number of participants or each agree to translate the same text for the sake of comparison.
