Consider the technologies you selected for this week’s Discussion.
For the Discussion, you identified the threats that might be associated with those technologies. Now, you will take that line of thinking a step further to explore what should be done to protect citizens from any threats to privacy introduced by your selected technologies.
Privacy advocates believe that it is crucial for the government to establish standards and rules that private companies and government organizations must follow. They believe these rules are necessary to protect citizens from having their personal information used inappropriately. Every time you shop using a credit or debit card, fill out an insurance form, or open a bank account, information is gathered about you. Privacy laws and policies keep this information from being distributed to others without your consent.
What role do you think the government should play in helping citizens become more comfortable with using new technologies and assuring that their privacy is protected?
For this Application, you develop a policy proposal aimed at protecting citizens from threats to personal privacy. To prepare for this assignment: Familiarize yourself with the Policy Proposal Template located in this week’s Learning Resources. Select one of the technologies you examined for this week’s Discussion assignment. Think about your answer to the question about whether or not you would still use the technology.
If you would not currently use the technology, what protections would have to be in place to raise your comfort level to the point where you would be willing to use it? For those technologies you would use despite a privacy risk, what provisions would you like to see in place to make you feel that that technology is safer to use?
Review your colleagues’ comments on your Discussion posting. Do they bring up any issues you had not previously considered? Conduct research on the history of your selected technology. Who uses the technology, and for what purposes? Research major threats to privacy presented by your selected technology. Identify three major threats. Think about what might happen if these threats were not addressed.
Consider ways the government could establish rules or standards that would reduce the threats, yet still allow people to benefit from your selected technology. The assignment (2–3 pages): Using the Privacy Policy Proposal Template located in this week’s Learning Resources, compose a 2–3 page policy proposal that addresses the protection of personal privacy in the use of one of your selected technologies.
