What moral would the people draw from the Zuni prayer

[meteor_slideshow slideshow="slide1"]

In principle, everyone should take notes on what you read. If you read every day thus, your notes will make up a journal. You use these notes to process the reading, to work out any problems and to answer any questions which occur to you. Your teacher then asks particular questions about specific readings and teachings, in the threaded discussions and quizzes. You develop answers to those questions as much as you can, and your teacher grades what you submit in the threads and tests.

Make rough notes in your private journal. Use those ideas, interpretations, and references to the stories, as you later develop topically focused answers, supported by evidence from the stories, to the questions in the threaded discussion or quiz.

Answer all three parts [worth up to 400 points]. Respond constructively, also, to two students’ postings in separate postings; failure to submit these two responses or extra answers will cost you 100 points.

  • A good answer responds to all parts of the question, makes a clear thematic statement, and supports the answer with illustratively detailed examples.  I will expect each answer to be at least one fully developed paragraph with a topic sentence or topic question, some topic development or answer, and some evidentiary support from our course readings (therefore at least five sentences).
  • If you quote a story (or lecture, or external source), put quotation marks around the quote; if you quote or paraphrase such material, also cite your source clearly: the alternative is plagiarism!
  • If you state a general observation, you need to offer supportive examples which you can explain. Illustrate everything! Explain everything!

Part 1: The Four-Step Aesop Fable Worksheet: pick an interesting fable to analyze! (Your choice shouldn’t seem too simple or boring to you or your reader.)

(1) Summarize the Key Elements In this Fable. You may pick one fable where you differ with the given moral.

(2) What is the point of the story (as you see it)? Re-phrase the Book’s Moral, if it fits (emphasizing one way of looking at the fable); and give your own moral, if different (perhaps emphasizing a different point of view in the story): explain two Morals.

(3) What Personal, Familiar, or Public Analogies to the story can you discover? Tell at least one story quickly which parallels the fable.

(4) How Do You Explain & Evaluate how well (or how poorly) the Story fits the Moral (yours as well as the book’s)? Write an interpretation.

PART 2: AESOP: Genre Worksheet (a separate posting is desirable).

  1.  PRACTICE WITH MORALS. List 3-4 morals, aphorisms or sententia that you know from elsewhere, and explain each one.
  2. PRACTICE MAKING A FABLE. Explain what happened when the student on probation parked by the fire hydrant, in order to sneak into the masquerade put on by a fraternity or sorority. Then tell a suitable moral.  [N.B.: you may wish to begin your story with the moral in mind that you wish to demonstrate.]

Part 3: Unit Review (answer at least 1):

  1. What is the foggiest point in the lecture or reading? You must explain a real issue. This foggy point must be detailed, concrete, and clear (to receive credit).
  2. Which fable is most applicable to your life, and how so?
  3. What moral would the people draw from the Zuni prayer? Explain.

TD 1

Use good English! Remember to give specific reasons for your position (or angles on the subject), as well as detailed illustrations from the literature (or also from your experience).

Use developed paragraphs. Make constructive and courteous responses to other student’s responses as well. (Minimum 2)
