This assessment project will require you to work in a small group in your workplace or in a simulated environment
in the classroom.

Part 1. Allocate work

 Task Description
In this part of the Assessment Project you are required to allocate work to an individual or group, confirm
performance expectations and conduct a risk analysis in relation to the allocated work. This project may be
completed either:
• within your workplace, or
• on the basis of the case study provided, or
• on the basis of a simulation provided by your trainer.

If you will be completing this activity in your workplace, you will need access to the following:

• Operational plans for the work unit/ organisation
• Code of Conduct used within the organisation
• Organisation’s risk management plan

If you will be completing this activity as a simulation, refer to the case study material on pages 14 – 25 or your
trainer will provide you with this information.

Task A
a) Meet with your workgroup to define the project that will be used for this Assessment Project. The project
could be:
• Related to another unit of study, or
• Based on real job roles within your workplace, or
• Based on the case study provided, or
• Related to a simulation provided by your trainer
(If you use the case study provided, select one part of business on which to base your project)

b) Write a description of the project and a summary of the job roles required to complete the project. (If
you conduct this project in the workplace, please provide a copy of the relevant position descriptions for the
project team.)
c) Develop work plans in consultation with work group. Explain how these work plans link with operational
plans of the organisation. (If completing this task in the classroom, your trainer will provide you with a
strategic or operational plan)
d) Allocate work to team members in a way that is efficient, cost effective and outcome focused. Report on
how you have done this.
e) Develop a set of performance standards and performance indicators for each team member.
f) Meet with team members to discuss performance standards, code of conduct and agree on performance
indicators. (Your trainer will provide you with a sample code of conduct.)
Task B
a) Conduct a risk analysis of the project to determine risks that may be faced during the project. . A risk
assessment template and matrix has been included on pages 6 & 7 to assist with this activity.

Benchmark Criteria:

Responses from students should include:

A Report to management outlining the meeting held with all relevant stakeholders, and the results and decisions
that were undertaken.

Write a Report on the project description and the allocation of jobs as well how will the work be allocated and
what performance standards and indicators are to be met.

A risk analysis report is also to be given outlining the risk involved in the Project.

Part 2. Assess Performance

 Task Description
You are now required to implement a performance appraisal process and assess the performance of individuals within
your work group.

Task A
a) Design a performance appraisal process to be used in your workgroup that is consistent with your
organisation’s objectives and policies. Explain how your process is consistent with organisational objectives and
policies. You may wish to refer to the information in the case study provided.
OR
a) If completing this task in your workplace: Review your organisation’s performance appraisal policy and
processes. Comment on how this process is consistent with organisational objectives and policies.

(complete one of the above two tasks and then complete b and c below)

b) Prepare a training manual for managers and other relevant staff to assist them to monitor performance and
identify performance gaps.
c) Run a training session with your team to implement the performance appraisal training you have developed in
task 1.b above.
Task B
a) Role-play a performance appraisal discussion with a team member using the process you have designed.
b) Report on the effectiveness and outcomes of the performance review discussion.
c) Describe the process you will use to monitor and evaluate performance on a continuous basis.

Responses from students should include:

Provide a Report to management outlining the merits of the performance appraisal system that will be utilised by
your organisation.

Provide an outline of your proposed training manual and sample training session.

Test your Appraisal format with a group role play session and provide a Report on the effectiveness of the
procedures.
Part 3. Provide feedback
 Task Description
You are now required to provide performance feedback to a number of team members and provide two coaching sessions.

Task A
a) Meet with a team member and provide informal feedback on their progress with work allocated to them.
Record your observations of the effectiveness of this discussion.
b) Follow up this informal discussion with a formal performance management discussion. Use your
organisation’s performance management process and forms to document performance.

Task B
a) Conduct a discussion with a team member to provide feedback in relation to poor performance. Record your
observations of the effectiveness of this discussion.
b) Use your organisation’s performance management process and forms to document performance and write and
agree on a performance improvement plan.

Task C
a) Conduct an on-the-job coaching session to support a team member address a performance problem. Record your
observations of the effectiveness of this coaching session.
b) Conduct an on-the-job coaching session to extend the performance of a high performing team member. Record
your observations of the effectiveness of this coaching session.
c) Record your observations of the effectiveness of these coaching sessions and comment on differences in your
approach to both of these sessions. Comment on whether including assistance from human resources specialists would
have improved the outcomes of your coaching sessions.

Benchmark Criteria:

Responses by students should include:

A Report on the performance criteria used; how effective is the performance management system and what were the
procedures in conducting informal feedback.

Provide a report on two coaching sessions given and outline the process.

Part 4. Manage follow up

 Task Description
Task A
a) Follow up on progress of performance improvement plan developed with team member in Part 3 Task 2b.
Discuss and record progress. Describe situations in which assistance from human resources specialists would have
been (or were) of benefit.

Task B
a) Describe the process you will use to provide recognition and continuous feedback for your team members.

Task C
a) Role play a discussion with a team member assuming they have continued to perform below expectations.
Describe the support services and disciplinary measures you will implement. Explain and justify your disciplinary
decisions.
b) Describe the process you would follow to terminate a staff member for serious misconduct or ongoing poor
performance.

A Report on the performance improvement plan that was developed.

Provide a Report on the requirements for specialist support, the ongoing feedback process and the support services
needed by the organisation.
