Engineering Mechanics – Statics assignment 2
Source: Statics and Structures text book
Loo, Y.C. and Guan, H., Statics and Structures, School of Engineering, Griffith
University Gold Coast Campus, 3rd Edition, 2013
Instruction:
Aim:
Statics assignments assess the ability of the students to apply theory to
problems and their understanding of the concepts. Through these assignments,
students’ problem solving skills and computational skills will be developed.
Submission:
All statics assignments must be submitted on or before the due dates. Late
submission penalties will apply based on the QIBT policy. Submission should be
handwritten hardcopy with an attached assignment cover sheet. Submit your
statics assignments to your lecturer in class.
Criteria & Marking:
Students must show their calculations for each question. If no calculation is
attached, no mark will be given. Mark will be awarded according to the
correctness of the final answer, the accuracy of the solution and the clarity of the
presentation. Please note that answers to all questions should be done individually.
REMEMBER TO INDICATE THE UNITS AND DIRECTION OF
ALL VECTORS
Analysis of trusses
1) For each of the statically determine trusses detailed in following figures,
preform a complete analysis of the member forces. Tabulate your results.
(a) (b)
2) For each of the trusses illustrated in following figures, determine the axial
forces in the members identified as a, b and c.

3) A lamp post is under action of three concentrated loads, parallel respectively
to the x, y and z axes. Compute the reactions at the built-in support at the
base. Dimensions are in millimeters.
4) Following figure shows a 3D cantilever system which is hinged at the root
(A) and supported by a prop (BC) on one side and a cable (DE) on the other
side of the beam (ACD). For the uniformly distributed load of 2.5 kN/m,
compute the reactions at A and the axial forces in the prop and the cable.
Hint: Determine axial forces in the prop and the cable first, followed by reactions at A. Use
ratios of length formulas.
