Finding an Article
You are free to select an article from either a popular or scholarly news source. Please make sure that the article was published during the current semester.
Popular Magazines
- Authors are typically journalists and not experts in the field.
- Content includes news and general interest articles.
- Appearance is characterized by color photographs and color illustrations.
- Language is simple, aimed at meeting a minimal education level.
- Sources may be second or third hand; the original source may not be clear.
- Examples include:
News/Newspapers
- Authors are typically journalists or free lance writers, but may be scholars.
- Content includes news or human interest.
- Appearance may have color photographs and color illustrations.
- Language is geared toward an educated audience.
- Sources may be cited, but not always.

Scholarly News Sources (Journals)
- Authors are experts in their field (researchers, professors, scholars)
- Content is typically highly specialized and includes findings from research projects, method development, and theory.
- Appearance is very plain with possibly a few images or plots.
- Language used will assume that the reader is familiar with the subject area.
- Sources are always cited.
- Access to these articles is via specialized databases such as Web of Science (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., Google Scholar (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., Temple Library (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., etc.
- Most scholarly journals are peer reviewed, referring to the process by which a group of researchers, with expertise in the area, provide a rigorous assessment of the work.
Writing the News Article Commentary
Your document should have the following:
- single spacing
- size 12 font
- 1″ page margins
- minimum of 1 page long
Your commentary should be broken up into two sections:
Part 1: Summary of the Article
- Identify the author and title of the work and include the publisher and publication date in parentheses.
- Write an informative summary of the article.
- To keep things concise, highlight the main points and the most important supporting points.
- The summary should be objective and factual; you will introduce your opinions and personal interpretations in the second part of the commentary.
- You may use direct quotations from the article to illustrate key ideas. Don’t overdo it though.
Part 2: Your Reaction to the Work
- How is the article related to ideas and concerns discussed in this class?
- How is the work related to problems in our present-day world?
- Did the article increase your understanding of the topic? Did it change your perspective in any way?
- Evaluate the merit of the article: the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, organization, etc.
- Would you recommend this article to others, why/why not?
