1. Come up with two hypotheses (or research questions) based on something that is interesting to you and relevant to your life (with a communication focus).*
Hypothesis 1: This hypothesis should include at least one dichotomous variable.
Example: Sally works as a waitress. She believes that if people are primed to a particular appetizer they will be more likely to order that (or any) appetizer before their meals.
H1: Restaurant customers are more likely to order an appetizer when asked if they would like to try a specific one than individuals not asked at all.
Hypothesis 2: This hypothesis should look at a relationship between two variables.
Example: Jamaal is consistently asking his parents for money. Jamaal usually
calls to ask for money but sometimes emails or texts. Sometimes his methods are successful and sometimes they are not. He believes he is more successful at borrowing money when he asks face-to-face.
H2: There is a significant relationship between the medium used and amount of
money received when asking to borrow money, such that the less mediated communication results in more money received.
2. Determine a method to test your hypothesis.
Utilize one of the quantitative methods discussed (survey, experiment, content analysis).
Note: Surveys may be verbal or written and may be only 1-2 questions long.
3. Determine your sample and its size.
4. Collect your data
5. Determine which tests to run to examine your hypotheses (you should run at least two different tests; Chi-Square, t-test, ANOVA, Correlation).
6. Run descriptive statistics and run your additional tests.
7. Write up your final report. (See back for details.)
*These hypotheses are strictly based on personal experiences versus our more traditional works that are based on previous research.
Final Report: Your final report should be 3-5 pages long.
1. Report your hypotheses and why these were of interest to you.
2. Fully describe the method that you chose, including any questions used.
3. Describe your sample and why it was appropriate.
4. Describe the tests you chose to run and why they were appropriate.
5. Report your descriptive statistics. This can be done in a table format if that makes the
most sense with your study.
6. Write up the results of your study. Report whether your hypotheses were supported
or not. Samples of how to write up the results of each of the tests discussed will be provided in those class periods.
7. What does it all mean? Analyze the results found and report a brief conclusion of the
study.
