Elizabeth Economy argues that Chinese President Xi Jinping has a stated and demonstrated desire to shape the international system, to use China’s power to influence others, and to revise the underlying principles of globalization and a liberal world order. (p. 187) The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Made in China 2025 (CM2025) Initiative are two examples of how China is using its power to re-shape the international economy.

(a) What is the Belt and Road Initiative and how is it an example of China’s deliberate effort to “shape the international system, to use China’s power to influence others, and to revise the underlying principles of globalization and a liberal world order?” (300 words)

(b) What is the Made in China 2025 (CM2025) initiative and how is it an example of China’s deliberate effort to “shape the international system, to use China’s power to influence others, and to revise the underlying principles of globalization and a liberal world order?” (300 words)

(c) Using the European Chamber study, “China Manufacturing 2025” select two sectors among the following:

· Next generation IT (including cloud computing, telecommunications equipment and semiconductors)

· Robotics

· Advanced Rail Equipment

· Energy-saving vehicles and NEV’s

· Biopharmaceuticals and high-performance medical devices)

For each sector, explain why the European Chamber is concerned about the challenges that CM2025 poses to the European Union and what it hopes to do about those concerns. Be specific in discussing the nature of the challenges/concerns. (300 words)
