- Just as women in the 1840s became more aware of the need for their own rights as a result of fighting for the rights of others in the abolitionist movement, so, too, did women in the 1960s become more aware of gender equality as a result of their work in the Civil Rights movement for racial equality. You will first read “Sex and Caste,” written by two women who worked in the Civil Rights movement but felt marginalized because they were women. Then, you will use those ideas to help you interpret the following three sources: employment ads segregated by gender, and written and visual sources of protest against the Miss America Pageant.
QUESTIONS
- What are the main points of “Sex and Caste” regarding lack of equality for women?
- How do you think the points you discussed in part a relate to the employment ads and the protest of the Miss America pageant? (written and visual sources)
